The Colombian National Summit of Women and Peace

The Colombian National Summit of Women and Peace is deeply saddened from learning of the passing away of Virginia Bouvier, “Ginny” as we all knew her.

Ginny has been a source of inspiration for us. Over the years of her unwavering commitment to peace in Colombia, we have been impressed by her ability to listen to the voices of Colombian organizations, their diverse interpretations of the conflict and the urgency to build peace, through her skills to communicate in her soft and kind voice.

As one of the most prominent international advocates for peace in Colombia, she made a major contribution to the peace process through research, dialogue, and supporting civil society organisations. As the director of the Colombia programme at the US Institute of Peace she never displayed her power and instead maintained a humble attitude that showed a special and transformative face of American commitment to peace in Colombia.

With an impressive spiritual, she paid special attention to the rights and the empowerment of women as agents of peace. Through her support a number of Colombian civil society organizations were able to share insights and lobby in Washington, at the USIP as well as US Congress. She also triggered numerous discussions and debates in Colombia.

Through this document we extend our most sincere condolences to Ginny ́s family. We ́d like to express sadness for her passing away, and our love and profound solidarity in recognition to Ginny for her support to Colombia. She will be missed by many, and her memory will stay with us.

COLOMBIA

La Cumbre Nacional de Mujeres y Paz ha conocido la triste noticia del deceso de Virginia Bouvier ,“Ginny” para la gran mayoría de nosotras.
La conocimos hace ya años con su voz suave, pausada, siempre escuchando a las diversas organizaciones en sus interpretaciones sobre el conflicto y la necesidad urgente de construcción de paz.

Vocera incansable de la situación colombiana, trabajó y aportó en la investigación, el debate, la incidencia, y los procesos organizativos. Su humildad siempre nos mostró una cara especial y transformadora de una mujer estadounidense que nunca hizo ostentación de poder alguno siendo como fue, la directora del programa Colombia en USIP.
Su compromiso desde su espiritualidad fue grande y trabajó con particular énfasis sobre los derechos y el empoderamiento de las mujeres como constructoras de paz. Sus jornadas nos llevaron a muchas a conservatorios de divulgación e incidencia en Washington -tanto al interior de USIP mismo, como frente al Congreso de EEUU- y a debates en nuestro propio país.

Hoy, queremos a través de esta comunicación, enviar un mensaje de profunda solidaridad, cariño a la familia y que puedan saber el reconocimiento hacia Ginny por su labor en el país y nuestra profunda tristeza por su fallecimiento. Queremos decirles además que su memoria siempre quedará grabada en nosotras.
